"Experiences with climate justice"

Climate justice calls for action to address the ethical dimensions of climate change. Certainly we are all affected – however exposure to risk and vulnerability is exacerbated by poverty and other axes of power. Further those who have contributed most to accelerating processes related to climate change are usually not the first to be dealing with the consequences. For example, while wealthy consumers may have their food shipped from one country or another, smallholder farmers have a higher risk of hunger when there are erratic and more extreme weather patterns. We will first give an overview of the concepts of justice and then give examples focused on agriculture in Africa. Specifically, we will offer insights from fieldwork in northern Ghana regarding the impacts of water scarcity and women’s rural responsibilities. The topic of climate justice will move between local and global scales from how climate change is encountered in diverse people’s everyday lives to national level negotiations between countries at the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP) meetings. We conclude with a reflection about how injustices are perpetuated in current systems and then involving participants in envisioning practical actions for justice
